This epic film about family, faith, power and oil is set in California during the early 20th century oil boom. There Will Be Blood follows the life story of Daniel Plainview, a poor silver miner raising his son on his own, turns into a self-made oil tycoon. After receiving a mysterious tip that a little town, centered around a holy roller church, is oozing with oil, Daniel and his son travel to the town to make an offer to buy some land. Although their wealth increases from the sale of oil, it will not stop the arising conflicts between the values of love, hope, community, ambition, and even the relationship between father and son, which are endangered by corruption, deception and the love of oil. There Will Be Blood is a great movie filled with great acting by Daniel Day-Lewis (Daniel Plainview), Paul Dano (Eli Sunday, the young charismatic pastor of the Church of the 3rd Revelation/Paul Sunday), Dillon Freasier (HW Plainview, Daniel’s son). I found Paul Dano did an exceptional job acting as Eli Sunday, the crazy false prophet/cult leader. One of my favorite parts is when Eli tells Daniel Plainview that he must be wash and baptised with the blood of Jesus and what he ends up doing when Daniel goes to church.
In terms of the length of the movie, I’ve heard a few people complain that it was too long. I personally didn’t think of it as being too long. It needed time to develop the story.
I found that the audio editing was fantastic! There were times when the background music kept me in greater suspense because, after watching many movies and knowing what to expect, I was thinking that something was about to happen, but then it wouldn’t.
Overall, I don’t have any complaints about this movie and I can definitely see There Will Be Blood winning the Oscar for Best Picture and some of the other awards that it’s nominated for. I believe this will become an epic classic!!!
