“As a result of NAFTA - The North American Free Trade Agreement - corporations from all over the world have built factories in Mexico along the U.S. border. Taking advantage of cheap labor and no tariffs, these companies manufacture goods at low cost to be sold in the United States. In Juarez, where there are over 1000 of these factories called “maquiladoras,” every three seconds a television is produced, every seven seconds, a computer. The “maquiladoras” hire maily young women because they work for lower wages and complain less about the long hours and harsh working conditions.

Most “maquiladoras” operate 24 hours a day. Many women are attacked while traveling to and from work in the late night and early morning. The companies provide no security for the workers.”

Bordertown, inspired by true event, brings to our attention the tragic story of the women of Juarez and the corruption in the Mexican judicial system.

Lauren Fredricks (Jennifer Lopez), an American journalist, travels to Juarez to investigate the deaths of hundreds of Mexican women and the police cover ups of the brutal rapes and murders. Lauren meets up with an old co-worker, Alfonso Diaz (Antonio Banderas), who owns a local newspaper company.

When they find the only survivor of these mysterious attacks, they work with the victim to get her story out and to face her attackers, but they face the adversity of those that don’t want her story publicized.
