The Matador is the story of how Danny Wright (Greg Kinnear), a traveling salesman, accidentally meets Julian Noble (Pierce Brosnan), a hitman, in a Mexico City bar and how their lives interconnect. To tell you the truth, this is a very lame movie. It totally misses the point of being a comedy and thriller. In the beginning we see Julian shooting some people, but we’re only told after 30 minutes into the movie that he’s an assassin who’s after corporates. One thing I don’t understand in this movie is the use of humongous letters to indicate the location change, but when it comes to subtitles, they’re so small you can’t read them. The acting isn’t too impressive at all. I’ve seen Pierce Brosnan in better roles. Greg Kinnear just doesn’t convince me at all. We know that Kinnear’s character is suppose to be nerveous, he’s meeting an assassin, but it doesn’t show at all!
I didn’t find the directing to be good either. One scene that I question is why does the movie change from Mexico City to Vienna, show a quick scene of Julian banging some woman, and then switch to the next city? Why do we need another sex scene to convey that Julian is a womanizer? We see enough banging already, so why some split second sex scene in Vienna? It just doesn’t add anything to movie at all.
I definitely do not recommend The Matador because of it’s poor plot, poor acting and poor directing. Save you money because there’s nothing funny or thrilling in this movie that makes it worth seeing.
