In Semi-Pro, Jackie Moon (Will Ferrell) is a one-hit wonder from the past, who uses the profits generated from his song, “Love Me Sexy”, to buy an ABA basketball franchise, the Flint Michigan Tropicals. As the league’s finances crumble, the NBA makes an offer to merge the top 4 performing teams of the ABA into its league. The Tropicals, at the bottom of the standings, are face with a battle to climb into one of the top four spots in the league in order to have life in the NBA.
Tonight, I went to see the exclusive screening of Semi-Pro. From the opening credits, my mind was screaming, “I want to go home!”. This is definitely not a pro or semi-pro movie, as it is plagued with vulgarities, crudeness and sexual humour. It’s not surprising to see Will Ferrell in a movie like Semi-Pro, as he’s been in several other films like this, including Old School, Blades Of Glory, and Wedding Crashers.
The storyline is horrible! From the opening screen, the movie goes downhill. Since when does somebody make a sports movie about a team going for 4th place? Not 1st. Not 2nd. Not 3rd, but 4th!!! By viewing the previews, it might look like a comedy, but in reality, there’s only two or three comical scenes, while the rest is vulgarities, crudeness, and sexual humour.
The acting…there’s nothing notable to mention.
There’s nothing in Semi-Pro worth paying to see. Don’t waste your money! If you want to have a good laugh, go watch Be Kind, Rewind instead!

I’m sadly growing very weary of Will Ferrell as a brand. I’d like to see him stretch his range a bit more. This movie was just this side of awful.

Will Ferrell is funny don’t get me wrong, but I can’t say I’ve had a desire to go see this or some of his other comedy movies.
Jeremy, I agree. When an actor only does one type of movie genre, it begins to get boring because it appears to the movie viewer that they want to keep it safe and not challenge themselves and do something different. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the only time he did something a bit different, was in Stranger Than Fiction.
I sort of enjoyed Will Ferrell more on SNL I think. I think the funniest I’ve seen Will Ferrell, was in the video he made where the little girl was playing his landlady. That was hilarious!
