Thursday night was the third evening of the Halifax Independent Filmmakers’ Festival, put on by the Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative (AFCOOP). The night featured the screenings of several of the best short films in Nova Scotia, mostly created by young filmmakers. All the films were great and very well done, some being their first film while others attended some of AFCOOP’s training sessions or used some of their equipment. I will highlight a few of the ones I really liked.
It All Adds Up is a 1 min 30 secs short claymation that illustrates the effect of littering from a global perspective. What amazed me was that this short film was written, directed and produced by 4 young boys ranging in age from 8 to 13 years old. The writers/directors/producers of this film are Logan MacGillivray, Usher Asheri, Ifari Fraser, and Colyer Roll.
The Lullaby of Mike Bossy, written and directed by Jeff Wheaton, is a short film of 22 minutes in length about a young hockey-playing girl who must face off with one of the toughest hockey players in town to win the last hockey card her father needs in order to complete his collection. In order to get to the hockey card competition, she must face adversity as everyone keeps telling her that hockey is not for girls.
Backfire is written, directed and produced by Justin Tomchuk. Backfire is the story of two mobsters who try to dispose of a body but get more than they bargained for…”wacky hijinks’s!” This short film is hilarious! It’s so hilarious that I was able to get a copy of it and with permission from Justin, you can also see this movie below. Justin Tomchuk and Tomchuk Films have screened several of their short films at various film festivals. You can view some of his other works by going to Tomchuk Films website.
Moment in Time, written and directed by Ryan “Ray Rey” Gannon, is a music video made with members of the Halifax youth group Leave Out ViolencE (L.O.V.E.). The music video was created for Canadian hip-hop artist Red-1’s song, Moment in Time. I was able to talk to director Ryan Gannon and video editor Andrew Abraham at the end of the night and found out that there was a group of mentors that came into the youth group to train each youth on their role in the video. Andrew Abraham, with the help from one of the crew members from Showcase’s TV show, Trailer Park Boys, had learned how to use the editing suite within a week. You can view the Moment in Time music video below:
