Young@Heart

Rating: Butter Popcorn

Young@Heart is the musical documentary about the Northampton, Massachusetts’ ensemble of twenty-four senior citizens who perform songs ranging from Allen Toussaint’s “Yes We Can Can” to Coldplay’s emotionally powerful “Fix You”. Musical director Bob Cilman prepares the group for their one-night performance in Northampton, which is only two months away. The ensemble is having a hard time with the lyrics to the seven new songs they must learn for their upcoming concert. With rehearsals scheduled three times a week, they slowly learn the songs, even though some of them may face sickness.

Young@Heart is an inspirational documentary as the group of senior citizens press on, even though some of them face sickness or death. Most of the members of Young@Heart are into classical and lighter music. It’s hilarious to watch them sing songs from punk and R&B artists, such as the song “Schizophrenia”. They butcher the lyrics at first, but after several practices, they learn to master the songs in time for the concert.

A great movie that will knock your socks off, Young@Heart is a movie every grandparent should see! Young@Heart is currently playing in select theatres.
