“Year after year, twenty-something women come to New York City in search of the two “L”s: labels and love. Twenty years ago, I was one of them. Having gotten the knack for labels early…I concentrated on love.”
- Carrie Bradshaw
Four years since the last episode in Paris, Sex and the City brings the four women back to New York City. Charlotte and Harry have adopted a girl from China. Miranda and Steve live in Brooklyn with their son and Steve’s mother. Samantha is currently living her life filled with sex and love with Smith in Hollywood. Carrie is still seeing Mr. Big while looking for a new apartment.
The four women continue to meet frequently, with Samantha flying in from the west coast, to discuss fashion, real estate, motherhood, and marriage.
“After years of living in the city I assumed that if my friends and I ever got our fairy tale endings that would be the end of the story. But real life - always has a twist.”
- Carrie Bradshaw
Sex and the City stars Sara Jessica Parker (Failure To Launch, Smart People) as Carrie Bradshaw, Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones, Cynthia Nixon as Miranda Hobbes (The Babysitters), Kristin Davis (The Shaggy Dog) as Charlotte York and Christopher Noth (NBC’s Law & Order) as Mr. Big.
Fergie brings some trendy beats to the soundtrack with her theme song, “Labels or Love”.
The movie is the equivalent to 5 episodes of the 30-mins HBO show. From the clothes on their back to “Fashion Week” and from Miranda and Steve’s problems in bed to Samantha watching her sexy neighbor, Sex and the City is filled with fashion and, you’ve guest it already, sex.
One of my favorite parts of the movie is on Valentine’s Day, when Samantha is preparing a surprise for Smith. She makes some sushi that she strategically places on her nude body. Lying down and waiting for Smith to enter the house any moment from now, she suddenly hears the phone ring but she’s not able to pick it up. Smith leaves a message that he’s running 30 minutes late. When he finally arrives, 3 hours later, Samantha is so furious that she starts chucking the sushi at him.
Sex and the City is not for everyone. It was created to satisfy cravings of its fan base, which includes millions of women. The movie doesn’t give too much background to how and why these four women meet and become best friends as it’s not an intro to the series, but rather a continuation to the HBO series that finished in Paris in 2004. If you’re a woman looking to drag your husband to see the movie, it’s probably not the best idea as he’ll be bored and won’t really understand what’s going on. You’re better off going with your girlfriends. In the theater of about 175 seats at Galaxy Cinemas Cornwall, there were about 10 men (under 10%). Don’t worry guys! They haven’t forgotten about us! I was sitting between two groups of women and listening to their conversations before the movie; it was all about their lives and the men in their lives!
If you’re a fan of HBO’s Sex and the City, you’ll love this continuation to the series but if you’ve never seen the series, I recommend that you watch a few episodes, at least the last few from the final season, before going to the cinema. I give Sex and the City a ‘Sexy Popcorn’ rating!

I was soooo disappointed with the movie - and you need to understand where I was coming from…I can probably recite word for word numerous episodes in their entirety - I have watched and rewatched all of the seasons multiple times, so to say I was psyched about seeing the film is an understatement….but what was with the michrophones throughout the majority of the movie???
I have seen junior high film productions that were more professional than this movie! I was appalled and totally distracted by the boom mikes bobbing along the top of each scene.
The movie itself struggled to capture both the humor and humility of the TV series, everyone tried just a little too hard - the script writers, the directors and, dare I say it, even the actors, although I thought Kim Catrall was as good as ever, and Kristen Davis put in a suprisingly good comedic performance.
Please, please get the camera work fixed before this is released on DVD, because I might be more inclined to enjoy the essence of the movie without the “bobbing” mikes! I am after all SATC’s #1 fan!
Had planned on going two or three times over this opening weekend to see “my” movie - now what am I going to do with myself??

I didn’t notice anything wrong with the sound last night. It could be the sound system at the cinema you watched it at. I’m not sure if you saw it in the U.S. or Canada, but in Canada it was distributed by Alliance, rather than New Line (in the U.S.). It could have been many things, but again, I didn’t hear any problems with the sound.

I really loved this movie. I was a fan of the series, and I think they did good by the plot and continuing on the story of the four ladies.

Here’s a guy’s input. I didn’t really like the series. Am abit put off by the fickle mindedness of the gals. But surprisingly, I love the movie when my wife and I watched is last weekend.
The pace is good and it gave movie goers the fuzzy feeling that they are craving for. I mean, everyone is hoping for that great ending right? So what if there’s no huge surprises, come on already!
