Over this past weekend, The Dark Knight broke several box office records. Early Friday morning, the film broke the midnight screenings record by bringing in $18.5M. This figure doesn’t include the 3am and 6am showings. The Dark Knight also shattered the single-day opening record by generating a whooping $67M and exploded the opening weekend record, which was last set by Spider-Man 3, by bringing in $155M over the past 3 days. The Dark Knight now sits in 4th place for the most advance ticket sales.
In other news, Mama Mia! came in second at the box office this weekend with $27.6M, the second biggest opening by a musical. Fox’s Space Chimps came in 7th place with $7.4M.

Unbelievable movie. It deserves all the kudos it gets. But it’s going to be hard to top. I suspect it’s going to be similar to Lucas trying to beat The Empire Strikes Back. It’s possible, but it’s going to be one heck of a monumental effort.
