Tropic Thunder

Rating: Popcorn

Five selfish and cocky actors are currently shooting a war movie directed by Damien Cockburn, but things just don’t seem to work out. Tugg Speedman, who hasn’t had a good role in years, is having a hard time performing in his emotional scene with Kirk Lazarus. Not only has the acting gone down the tubes, but a $4 million explosion! They’re only in their fifth day of shooting and they’re already one month behind schedule. Studio executive Les Grossman is about to pull the plug on the whole production. In order to save the movie, director Damien Cockburn receives a brilliant idea from Vietnam vet, Sgt. Four Leaf Tayback: take his crew into the Vietnamese jungle to shoot the film. Will they be able to pull it off and please the studio execs?

A film written, produced and directed by Ben Stiller, DreamWorks SKG’s comedy Tropic Thunder showcases some of the funniest guys in the business, including Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Ben Stiller, Tom Cruise, Jake Baruchel, Nick Nolte, Steve Coogan, Brandon T. Jackson, Danny R. McBride and Bill Hader.

Tropic Thunder

Tropic Thunder is a hilarious movie that pokes fun at war movies and the lives of celebrities in Hollywood. Robert Downey Jr. shines in his role as Kirk Lazarus as he really is “the dude playing the dude disguised as another dude”! Jack Black provides the audience with some good laughs from time to time, but he sometimes goes a little to close to the edge. Meanwhile, Ben Stiller tries to outshine the others throughout the movie, but fails at doing so. His ridiculous antics almost bring his film down into the dumpster, but is saved by the other main actors.

Recently, the film has received bad publicity for its repeated use of the word “retard” and making fun of people with disabilities. I personally do not understand why people get in an uproar about a word that means “late” and is frequently used in French, but they don’t protest the vulgar films Will Ferrell comes out with every year. The bad publicity will probably not hurt the film’s quest to overpower The Dark Knight at the box office this weekend as the target audience will still flock to the cinema to catch the comedy.

Tropic Thunder

Although the bad press maybe lurking over some people’s minds, Tropic Thunder is still a hilarious comedy! The movie is not recommended for younger teens, even though it’s rated PG-13/14A. I just wish they would have cut out some of the language or up the rating to R.

If you’re looking to laugh this weekend, check out Tropic Thunder, which is now playing in theaters.
