Dana Marschz is an actor-turned-worse-high-school-drama teacher trying to motivate his students to act but things aren’t falling into place. With the drama program on the verge of being canceled, Dana brings his students together to stage a politically incorrect musical sequel to Hamlet that has parents in an uproar.
Focus Features and Alliance Films’ Hamlet 2 stars British comedian Steve Coogan (Tropic Thunder, Around the World in 80 Days), Academy Award-winning Catherine Keener (Capote, Being John Malkovich), Saturday Night Live’s Amy Poehler (Blades of Glory, Baby Mama), and guest stars Elizabeth Shue (Cocktail, Back to the Future II).
The movie stars off slow with a little bit of slapstick comedy here and there. Everything is going wrong in Dana’s life, from his rollerskating abilities to his stage plays. Eventually Hamlet 2 begins to pick up the pace as the timing of the jokes are bang on, setting us up for the controversial musical and its hit song “Rock Me Sexy Jesus”.
Hamlet 2 is quite unique in a sense, not because of its comedy, but because of the way the co-writers of South Park and Team America, Andrew Flemming and Pam Brady, section the movie into five acts, just like William Shakespeare’s original “Hamlet”.
What starts off slow with a few chuckles will have you laughing your head off by the end! Hamlet 2 is a mix of Jesus Christ Superstar, “Hamlet” and Napoleon Dynamite! Like any combinations of these films and you’ll love this smash-hit comedy! Hamlet 2 begins today in select theatres and releases in theatres everywhere on August 29th!
Theatrical Release Date: August 22, 2008
