War Dance is a moving Oscar-nominated documentary that will pierce the heart as Sean and Andrea Fine take you into the war-torn northern part of Uganda, places where we could and/or would not be able to go. The film focuses on three students and their horrific stories, however it doesn’t lambaste their stories by keeping them as the main focus. The filmmakers give more attention to how these three children move on from their past and how their love for music is a major influence on their change. For these three students, having their school compete in Kampala for the National Music Competition, Uganda’s biggest competition, means everything to them. With over 20,000 schools competing to be the best, their chance to go to Kampala are slim.

Amnesty International USA’s Human Rights Education Program has provided Shine Global, Inc., the non-profit film production company that made War Dance, with an excellent curriculum. The 72-page educational companion curriculum will help teachers initiate in-class discussions and after-school activities for their students about Uganda, human rights and personal responsibilities. The curriculum is aimed at students in junior high, but can be used in high school and college. The educational package does come with the purchase of the DVD through www.shineglobal.org.

Whether you’re an educator or a parent, I would highly recommend viewing War Dance and going through the educational curriculum with your students or your children as it will enrich their minds with a global perspective on life while also teaching them about perseverance and social responsibility.
