It was a busy weekend at the box office, with 6 films making their debut. The results were a surprise to some, while shocking to others. Topping the weekend charts is Disney’s Beverly Hills Chihuahua, raking in $29M over 3 days. Columbia Pictures’ Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist, starring Michael Cera and Kat Dennings, placed third with $12M. David Zucker’s comedy, An American Carol, came in 9th with $3.8M. The new TVA Films limited release documentary poking fun at religion, Religulous, placed 10th at the box office, but had the weekend’s second highest average ticket sales per theatre, generating $6,972/theatre while only playing in 502 theatres. The two shocking results came from two films with Oscar-nominated casts: Universal Pictures’ Flash of Genius in 11th place with $2.3M and Alliance Films’ Blindness, which finished in 12th with $2M.
