On a trip to New York, Walter (Richard Jenkins) discovers that a young immigrant couple have taken over his apartment in the city. Through this encounter, he develops an unexpected and deep relationship with them that will change the course of his life. As his new tenants, Tarek and Zainab, face challenges, Walter finds himself compelled to help them out while rediscovering a passion he thought he had lost.
Alliance Films’ The Visitor stars Richard Jenkins (Six Feet Under), Haaz Sleiman (American Dreamz) and Danai Jekesai Gurira (Ghost Town).
The Visitor takes us through Walter’s life transformation: from going through the motions of life to finding a new passion and zest for live. Many of us are in need of a similar transformation as we live our busy lives. When we were children, we thought that time went by very slowly. Now in adulthood, we become so occupied with work and with the things we’re doing that we forget what we’re doing and why we’re doing it. We get so caught up in our routines and busyness that we don’t take time to enjoy life or to lend a helping hand. There are many people in the world that need help, but we just walk by them. Just think of the many panhandlers on our busy streets that we walk by each day without even noticing them. If we were to take a couple of minutes and start a small conversation with them, it could give them the courage to press on in life. Although this not exactly what Walter does in the film, it would definitely give them the strength to go on with their day. Who knows? You might be transformed by just saying a few words to somebody who needs them. Panhandlers are not the only ones that need help. If you look around you, you’ll see various needs coming from co-workers, friends, family, new immigrants, etc. The opportunities to help are plenty.
The Visitor is a great humanitarian film that I highly recommend seeing. Alliance Films, the exclusive distributor of the film in Canada, released the film on DVD this past Tuesday, October 7, 2008.
Release Date: April 11, 2008
