History knows him as Genghis Khan, but before he became a warlord, he was simply a man named Temudgin. Exiled into slavery as a boy and forced into a life of struggle after his father is killed by a rival clan, the greatest military mastermind of all time survived on the strength of a single dream: to unite his people into the largest empire the world has ever known.

Japanese actor Asano Tadanobu gives a touching performance as Temudgin in this epic film written and directed by Russian director Sergei Bodrov. Mongol received an Oscar nomination in 2007 for Best Foreign Language Film (Kazakhstan).

Filmed in China, Kazakhstan and Mongolia, Mongol takes your through the breathtaking mountains and valleys that helped it receive an Oscar nomination. It was necessary for Bodrov’s crew to build roads to some of the locations as they were too remote. For one of the battle scenes shot in China, the filmmakers needed to import from Kazakhstan 1,500 horses and riders, who were amateurs who needed two months of training before filming.

Tomorrow, October 14th, Alliance Films will be releasing Mongol on DVD. Although the film only plays in its original Mongolian language, the DVD features English and Spanish subtitles that are easy to read and not to quick to miss. Mongol is not only a great film for its scenery, but for its interesting epic story that follows a historical figure’s life as he rises from slavery to become the general who would create history’s most powerful empire. Mongol is one of this year’s best films that has gone unnoticed because of its limited distribution. Next time you’re looking for an epic film, check out Mongol as it is definitely worth watching.
