DreamWorks Animation’s new family flick, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, drove families across North America to the box office this weekend as it tops the charts with $63.5 million, making it one of the top 10 biggest opening weekends of 2008! Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott’s new comedy, Role Models, debuted in the number 2 spot with $19.3 million. The other major new release, Soul Men, which received poor to fair reviews, generated $5.6 million, not enough to be in our weekly top 5 movies at the box office. The film, which stars Samuel L. Jackson and the late Bernie Mac, began it’s journey to the big screen in 6th place.

This week cinemas around the world will be serving the new 007 movie, Quantum of Solace, which has already broken some box office records in the United Kingdom. Will the British success of the film make its journey across the Atlantic to the North American market, or will the family sequel to Madagascar trump the box office for a second week?
