With four new major releases opening on Wednesday because of the U.S. Thanksgiving weekend, the North American box office brought in $236 million over the 5 days, the second largest Thanksgiving box office weekend, falling $8.4 million short from the holiday weekend numbers from 2000. Alliance/ New Line Cinema’s Christmas comedy Four Christmases stole the show as it generated $46.7 million. Baz Luhrmann’s new film, Australia, came in a disappointing fifth place with $20 million. Jason Statham returned to the big screen this weekend as Frank Martin in Transporter 3, but wasn’t able to impress the franchise fans as it made its debut in seventh place with $18.5 million. The final new release of the weekend, Milk, which stars Sean Penn, finished in tenth spot with $1.7 million, but only played in 36 theatres. How will Milk place next weekend as the film expands to more theatres?
